I'm no hardware expert but I'll give it a go

AMD used to be the ONLY choice for hash cracking but I think it was only because the drivers allowed special instructions.

AMD hardware is usually not as sophisticated as nvidia. AMD usually runs hotter because AMD basically over-clock everything as standard, to make lesser hardware perform better.

Recently in an effort to keep up with nvidia I think AMD broke the PCIe specification, which annoyed many users as it could potentially cause serious damage due to over voltage.

Now nvidia have changed how their drivers work it is possible to use the type of instructions required for hash cracking.

nvidia's hardware potential is not yet fully exhausted, however as mentioned above, AMD is pushing their older hardware beyond its limits.

I could be completely wrong about this though

I can understand from where your coming from! It makes sense. Even AMD processors run hotter than two rats making love in a wool sock! LOL!

Im personally an AMD person when it comes to cracking hashes. But then again, I have never owned an Nvidia product,
so I can't bash them. One thing that turns me off from Nvidia tho is the cost of there cards.

I have both AMD and NVIDIA cards now, albit it's only 1 NVIDIA cards. I have to admit, the NVIDIA card I have out performs my AMD cards no problem, and uses lower watts. The AMD cards are cheaper but AMD is going through a rough patch.

If you can afford, I would got NVIDIA tbh. If money is an issue, then ebay and buying AMD cards maybe the better option.

Yeah i can not afford a nvidia. I have a friend selling his R9 295x2 for $650 and it's only a couple of months old...good price but still out of my price range.

DO NOT BUY A 295x2 for compute loads like hash cracking.

I just sold one of these monsters. It was an amazing card. It used WAY too much power though and generated WAY too much heat.

I'm running 2x Titan-X now and I love them. I still have 2x 5970's but I've stuck them in a slave compute and have been using them for Vanity Address generation.

Do as @user said, buy GTX 970's used. That's going to be your best option.

On Nvidia GTX 970 you can reach 173.4 kH/s speed.

This card is nearly the same speed as the R9 290X, is the same price (or less) than the 290X, and yet draws 55% less power than the 290X (only 145W!) This is an amazing low-budget GPU!

But if you have a little more money then I would recommend to buy GeForce GTX 980 / 980 Ti / Titan X.
Currently produced cards by AMD strongly heat up and are power-hungry.
The only exception is old and still very good, economical and not expensive Radeon HD 5970. This card can reach more than 150 kH/s, but it is difficult to get it now in good condition.

I have 2x 5970's that I might be parting with soon as I'm upgrading to multiple Titan-X's. Would it be worth listing here in the hardware section before /r/hardwareswap or ebay?

Of course, this is a legendary card for crackers. It's recommended to post your offer here.
In sale offer, it is advisable to show the benchmark of these cards. Write there too - Is the card was overclocked? And does it have an external cooling? For example - the famous Arctic Accelero Xtreme?
If they are in good working condition - I would buy them from you, but not now. Currently don't need any GPU and also I don't have free funds now.
