Hi

Until recently I have always used winrar as I just thought it was best but I have recently been turned on to 7zip which does seem to have a better compression ratio.

I just wondered what you experts thought was the best for text files ? It does seem to be 7zip and by quite a margin.

I thought this subject would be of interest to members here as we regularly need to compress large test files.

Thanks
.

Yeah 7zip is better, bit slower but much better compression. I use WinMount as it supports all compressions algos and also allows u 2 mount them as drives if need be. This is useful as it also supports .vhd and .vmdk virtual disks

Thank you.

That software looks good !

I think for day to day stuff 7zip is quick and very efficient.

Wow thank you k9, great find !

Well, it looks like 7zip isn't top dog after all !!

I have tried the best on that list "fp8_v3" and although it is agonisingly slow it has great results.

Here is a simple test I did and the reason I have been so long in replying to you.

Input list 14.2MB text file.

Winrar 5.44MB

7Zip 3.78

and the daddy of them all..... fp8_v3 3.03 !!!

Thank you very much K9 for that link !

nice K9, I just used FP8, it is semi-slow but the output is insane... might take a look @ src code and see if I can tweak it even more! anyways great find bro, long time no talk too
