They isn't really a "best way to attack a handshake" depends a lot on the router your attacking.

As for software for attacking handshakes you got these...

oclHashcat-plus run on Windows, Linux and Mac, Free, GPU only supported http://hashcat.net/oclhashcat-plus/
Probably the best one but may be a bit complicated for some.

IGPRS (Ivan Golubev's Password Recovery Suite) runs on Windows only, Free, GPU and CPU supported http://www.golubev.com/igprs/

Elcomsoft Wireless Security Auditor runs on Windows only, NOT free, GPU and CPU supported http://www.elcomsoft.com/ewsa.html

There's also Reaver but this attacks the wps pin on supported routers, it is a bit buggy but it does work.
Usually quicker than attacking the handshake and it doesn't matter how long the key is. Linux only http://code.google.com/p/reaver-wps/

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k
GPU: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

you have many pc´s and friends with pc you can use elcomsoft over the network / internet and bundle your power and speed ,,
e.g. only one pc 1000 hashes
two pc over the network/internet 2000 hashes
