I've tried and tried.
I have the following hashes:
$1$O1xYHoU8$cC65Lfg/Hq/XjQwtLkUG8/ 12345
$1$S9s3Dygf$OVMUzySDBHNcCPiDuFbQz. pr2200
$1$sbI5zU2X$G1af5QfqvV.ebZEKK3Y8f0 mickeymike
$1$FwcOeG13$WnrWFHUv6GvNdP3chd8q70 John1991
$1$AHJ4DL4l$3ATOPl5sK5EUle.h5SyCM/ monic@

But need help with the rest:
$1$.sOKAmRL$JiwXolfzv9EmRbSUuTTt.1
$1$a8JZ8Ipv$RX1dDlrulHdKWtSqynbOO1
$1$2uguJeYT$UH0Bk2zp3YM2VHenDfm801
$1$FtyqGMhw$yjiVMZocrwOuMN76q7iVV.
$1$TUkk2sf7$1st1XCc.jU0FzTiZ9XZLz0

I know they are salted MD5 hashes (MD5-Crypt). I can hash the passwords that I retrieved with the salt and get the ones I already solved.
I've used multiple dictionaries. I need some help.
Thank you guys!!

Thank you techtrip!

I have spent days on this.
After I used JTR with multiple dictionaries I tried rainbowcrack. It is taking a LONG time to make my rainbow tables because I need .rt instead of .rti2 that freerainbowtables.com has.

Are there any more that I can get help with?

Thank you guys so much.

PapaSmurf and techtrip:

Are y'all using rainbow tables?
I have Kali, Mint, and windows on my computer. I primarily use kali.
I started with JTR and used many dictionaries like rockYou and crackstation, enabling --rules and --fork
But I wanted to take it a step further and use rainbow tables with rainbowcrack. I downloaded one but it is in .rti2 format and I can't convert it to a simple.rt
Even then, I worry that it isn't the specific md5-crypt hash that I need, since there are different ways to salt it.

Can y'all give any suggestions?

Thank you so much for the passwords given

In kali linux terminal type:

hashcat -m500 [location of hash.text] -a0 [location of wordlist (i.e. rockyou.txt)]

To add rules it would be something like

hashcat -m500 [location of hash.text] -a0 -r /home/*/hashcat/rules/best64.rule [location of wordlist (i.e. rockyou.txt)]

I had to install opencl so I ran:

Code:
apt-get install ocl-icd-libopencl1 opencl-headers clinfo

Then I had to force it since I have an intel processor by running:

Code:
hashcat -m500 -a 0 -o cracked.txt md5hash /usr/share/wordlists/rockyou.txt --force

and I got:

Code:
root@kali:~# hashcat -m500 -a 0 -o cracked.txt md5hash /usr/share/wordlists/rockyou.txt --force
hashcat (v5.1.0) starting...

I tried adding a : between each, among other things but it's not reading the file.
According to the example hashes on the hashcat website, it should be in regular form.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Edit: I think I got it. I had to use the shadow file instead. It's running right now.

Make a text file and put your 3 remaining hashes in exactly as they are here and try again.

Each on seperate lines:

$1$a8JZ8Ipv$RX1dDlrulHdKWtSqynbOO1
$1$2uguJeYT$UH0Bk2zp3YM2VHenDfm801
$1$TUkk2sf7$1st1XCc.jU0FzTiZ9XZLz0

And by the way, you are using your GPU, not your CPU. GPU's are only good for a few things--hash cracking is one of them.

I used my shadow file configured like this:

Ruth:$1$2uguJeYT$UH0Bk2zp3YM2VHenDfm801:17603:0:99999:7:::

And it's working.

Thank you so much for the help!! I really find this fun (and all consuming)

Took a closer look at your output..

You'll have to get hashcat to recognize your GPU, or your speeds will be extremely slow. If you have issues Hashcat also runs on your Windows and Mint partitions. If you have an integrated GPU that's too slow you can always post in the paid section.

@mkIV quick FYI:
Rainbow tables were generated back in the day for non-salted hash algorithms like md5, ntlm, sha1, etc. Your hashes are md5cyrpt which are salted so rainbow tables won't work on them. In fact, it's not feasible to generate rainbow tables for any salted algorithm, and with the rise of salted algorithms and fast gpu's, rainbow tables are used very little anymore.

If you want to step up your game a great place to start would be to upgrade your gpu.

Yeah, I know. I bought this computer almost 4 years ago for $500. I upgraded the HDD to SSD and that's been the best thing I've ever done to it haha. It boots in 4-7 seconds depending on what operating system I boot up.
By the way, it has a GT2 GPU with only 256M

I was using google cloud's virtual machines in order to do dictionary attacks with JTR. I got 64 cores. I had $300 for signing up and burned through that rather quickly. I keep getting errors trying to run hashcat on these servers even though I install opencl. Hashcat can't find anything (maybe because it doesn't have a graphical interface, hence no access to the gpu?) IDK
I always thought it would be a waste to buy a desktop since I can't take it anywhere with me haha
but now I know it's usefullness

To put it in perspective, I cracked that hash in less than 10-15 mins using 1 nVidia GTX 1080. I think they are about $250 used on eBay.

That's awesome!!!
I just researched about cpu vs gpu usage.
I was an aircraft electrician, then quit that to set up and monitor VLANs on oil rigs
I really took an interest to networking, and that job was limiting me so I started computer science, but switched to Informatics (system administrator concentration). I know how to code multiple languages and now I'm learning the ones and zeros of exactly how the networks work (pretty interesting stuff)
I could never justify a desktop but now that I'm in the field that I am in, I think I need to start saving.

Did you use any rules when you found that?
Maybe you'll help me find a couple more?

Thanks!!

A good alternative for cloud gpu is vast.ai and select their nvidia-cuda or nvidia-opencl Docker image with ubuntu-xx. Once downloaded, hashcat will work out of the box.

BTW I ran your 3 remaining hashes through rockyou + best64 (abt 2 minutes on my rig) and nothing cracked.

Haha thank you for that @tean_cyclone
I appreciate it more than you know.

On a serious note, I had an Acer Predator Helios 300 in my amazon cart for a couple months. It's got an i7-8750H (I like this, compared to the U model that I have now...) with a GTX 1060 6GB GPU and 16GB DDR4 Ram
Anyways my wife evidently decided to *surprise* me with it. She didn't realize that I have notifications enabled on the Amazon app.

I looked up the specs on the GTX 1060 and I was looking at the benchmarks, comparing it to others:

Videocard---------|------Average G3D Mark|
-----------------------------------------|
GeForce GTX 1080--|-------12,463---------|
GeForce GTX 1060--|--------9,096---------|

@techtrip you said that your 1080 ran through rather quickly
I think I have a better chance now...

I was thinking about spending about $1,500 and building a desktop with a RTX 2XXX
but now that this Acer is on the way, I don't know now

Here is the output from your 3 hashes running rockyou with best64.rule on my 1080. It might give you some idea where you stand with the 1060. Keep in mind that some hashes are faster and some are much much slower.

Wow!!
Okay I think anything is better than what I have now. I think I'm going to do okay with this. It's not *exactly* what I want, but I think I will do fine. I kinda want a 1080 over the 1060 but I don't know if I can ask my wife to take it back haha
Look at the attached picture.

You can get both . Many (or most) of the crackers here have more than 1 GPU.
